What is it?

A document outlining the organisation’s strategy for the next 3-5 years. Includes an executive summary and a high-level budget. The first year may have a detailed annual operating plan.

Why use it?

Benefits: Provides a consistent view of goals and actions.
Limitations: Can become an end in itself rather than a means to an end.

When to use it?

After deciding on strategic options and future direction.

How to use the guide:

Use the headings to structure your plan and organise your analysis.

Plan Contents:

  1. Executive Summary: A brief overview of the plan for stakeholders.
  2. Introduction: Purpose, background, staff/volunteer stats, and service user description.
  3. Purpose: Mission, vision, and values of the organisation.
  4. Drawing from the Past: Learnings from past performance and beneficiary needs.
  5. Future Potential: Future challenges and internal strengths.
  6. Strategic Objectives for the Next Three Years: Key tasks and outcome measures for main work areas.
  7. Delivering the Plan and Timetable: High-level activities, budget, and timeline for achieving objectives.
